I’ve been keeping this one a secret for awhile now, but I just can’t hold it in any longer. I am so pleased to show you my newest historic preservation tax credit project in downtown Alexandria, Louisiana. Continue reading →

“My best advice would be to surround yourself with some type of community that can encourage you on a regular basis.” ✨ @luliewallace nails it with this quote (and this wallpaper that is soon headed to my client’s butler’s pantry!) ✨ I often feel like my posts here are segmented, unrelated, and probably confusing to you, my audience. Are you asking questions like, “What does she do? Historic preservation or design? Why doesn’t she just pick one?” ✨ Here’s the thing: I’ve been asking myself the same questions. What is it that people even think I do? Am I communicating well what I’m talented at doing and what I went to graduate school to learn how to do - and do well? I’m not sure I am, but I’m working on better sharing my story by first believing I have something unique worth sharing. It has taken a creative community to give me the confidence to do so. ✨ What I want you to know is that I studied hard to learn the science of #historicpreservation and that I have an innate sense of #design. I believe my unique combination of head and heart results in spaces that are seen and felt. ✨ All of this feels a little out of the ordinary and very vulnerable to write about myself, but what I want you to know and me to remember is that it’s okay to not do things the ordinary way. In my case, most designers aren’t well-versed in preservation standards and most preservationists aren’t that into design, which most of the time leaves me feeling like I don’t fit in either crowd. ✨ I’m flipping a switch and seeing that as an opportunity to enter a space that seems fit just for me to do my best work. So thanks to those of you who trust me to help you steward your historic places AND reveal the personality in your homes. Be it preservation, design, or both, your confidence in me is an encouragement to always do my best work and never give up on #beingacreative. ✨ PS - #luliewallacewallpaper available @southernchichome 😉
Started my Monday off with a site visit to @emmanuelalexandria 💚 What a gorgeous morning! I’m wrapping up the final phase of their #preservationtaxcredit project. 💚 This new, synthetic #greentileroof replaces a worn out composite tile roof originally of the same color and pattern. In most cases, using new materials on historic buildings is an approved practice when size, shape, and color match the original, but please don’t replace your original wood windows with vinyl replacements!😉 .... #louisianapreservation #preservationconsultant #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #historicpreservationmatters #downtownalexandria #preservationtaxcredit #historicchurch #sacredplaces #thisplacematters #thoseclouds
Happy Friday! 🌸 One of the best things about living in an old house in the South is mature trees and shrubs that flower when the weather warms! 🌸 I call these Star Magnolias and look forward to them blooming every year. I’ve heard others call them Japanese Magnolias. ✨ Just curious what you call this beautiful tree? I have a hunch it varies according to what part of the South you call home! #oldhouselove #springinthesouth #starmagnolia #japanesemagnolia #southernlivingplants #grumpygardener #alexandriagardendistrict #historicdistrictlove

Monday made. 🌿 I have been looking for #palmettos on the side of the road since early January. Today, I found some that were accessible AND I had my cutting shears in the car. 🙌🏻 January always calls me to #simpledecor So happy to have this #housegoal accomplished.
It’s a lazy, cold Saturday and I’m thankful for the downtime. ✨ Soccer games have been cancelled and I’m looking forward to working on a few projects around the house. I’m still loving our master bedroom rearrange from last weekend and thinking about adding art to our bare walls. Head to stories and Let me know what you think! ✨ #dogsofinstagram #heirloomquilt #interiorstyling #oldhouselove #preservationpup
Careful demolition often reveals clues to a home’s original construction. 🔨 Cousins are rehabbing the family homestead and uncovered the location of the home’s two original front doors. One opened into the living room and a second into a front bedroom. Anyone else live in a Craftsman with two front doors? ... #louisianapreservation #craftsmanstyle #historicpreservation #oldhouselife #cheeseclothwallpaper
Happy Monday! I’m loving the simple form and architectural details on this Creole Cottage in Grand Couteau. ✨ And, I’ll take some of that sunshine back. It’s currently cold + cloudy. ... #louisianaarchitecture #historicpreservation #grandcouteau #creolecottage #vernaculararchitecture
